The Do’s and Don’ts of Teething Treatments

Coming out of the first teeth of your baby is one of the most valuable milestones of the initial years of your baby’s life. Although the milk teeth are temporary and last only for a few years, they play a vital role in setting the base for better oral health in the future. That is why kids dentistry should also be addressed with equal importance as adults.

You will find a lot of popular teething treatment solutions in your surroundings for soothing the tender gums of your infant. But you cannot rely upon all those methods as you must be extra cautious about your child’s health and future. Thus, the parents need to have a better knowledge about the teething process.

Some Common Teething Symptoms in the Infants

The teething process can start as early as three months and can delay until 15 months of the baby’s age. But in most cases, the first tooth pokes through the gums at the age of 6 months. Although it might sound very exciting, it can actually be an extremely painful experience for both the baby and the parents. The symptoms of the emergence of the first set of teeth include:

  • Gum swelling
  • Excessive dribbling or drooling
  • Increased crying and irritability of the child
  • Tugging the ear and rubbing the cheek
  • Increased desire to chew or bite the hard objects
  • Days of sleeplessness

Now, let us take a view upon some of the popular methods of preventive pediatric dentistry, and which of those can be helpful, and which methods are to be discarded or avoided.

Some Kids’ Preventive Dentistry Treatments to Rely Upon (Do’s)

  • Get something to chew on for your baby under your supervision. Preferably, try to give a cold washcloth or something made of firm and non-hazardous material.
  • Lightly freeze some washcloth or a spoon and hold it on the baby’s sensitive gums.
  • Chill the nipples of the feeding bottles or the pacifiers in the freezer before use.
  • Gentle massage on the gums with your clean fingers or clean cloth can alleviate the pain to some extent by stimulating the tissue.
  • A teething ring can be a very useful thing to give the baby to bite on.

Some Kids’ Preventive Dentistry Treatments to Avoid (Don’ts)

  • Avoid using amber teething necklaces. Many claim that these stones release a substance for pain-relief that gets absorbed into the baby’s bloodstream when it stays connected with the baby’s skin. However, no scientific evidence has been found in support of these claims till now.
  • Another substance that the pediatric specialists forbid using on the kids is lidocaine. It is a topical anesthetic that can cause severe toxicity for infants. It can lead to critical brain damage, seizures, and in extreme cases, death.
